Depression

Depression is one of the most common mental health conditions, and yet it is one of the most misunderstood. Many people believe that those who suffer from depression are merely “sad”. This leads to messages that can be counterproductive and damaging. For example, people with depression are frequently told to “get over it”, that they shouldn’t be depressed because they have good lives, and that they are to blame for the way they feel.

At InnerSight Psychotherapy, our goal is to smash those myths about depression while helping you manage a condition that is very real and frightening. Depression can strike for any reason or no reason, and it can manifest in a variety of ways from one person to the next.

The symptoms of depression include the following:

  • A deep sense of sadness, hopelessness or desperation that is not necessarily tied to an identifiable cause
  • Low self-esteem, poor confidence, and feelings of guilt and shame
  • A lack of interest in previously enjoyable activities
  • Sleeping or eating too much or too little
  • Low energy levels and an inability to concentrate on the task at hand
  • Physical symptoms include digestive problems, aches and pains, and a general feeling of being run-down
