What we help with

What people come to us for in Barrie

Our Barrie therapists work with adults, teens and children across the concerns below, in person on Bradford Street or online anywhere in Ontario. Each one links to a fuller explanation of how we approach it.

Anxiety and panicRacing thoughts, a tight chest, the sense that something is about to go wrong. We work on what keeps the alarm switched on, and on practical ways to turn the volume down. Depression and low moodWhen everything takes more effort than it used to and the things you enjoyed stopped landing. We work at a pace that does not ask you to be motivated first. Trauma and PTSDSeven of our Registered Psychotherapists are trained in trauma-focused work, including EMDR. You set the pace, and you never have to retell more than you want to. Grief and lossGrief arrives in waves rather than stages, and it does not run to a schedule. A place to put it down for an hour, without being told how you should be doing by now. Stress and burnoutFor when work, caregiving or both have quietly become the whole week. We look at load, boundaries and recovery, not just at coping harder. Anger and irritabilityAnger usually sits on top of something else. We work out what it is protecting, and build a gap between the feeling and the reaction. Relationship difficultiesThe same argument on repeat, distance that crept in, or trust that needs rebuilding. Couples sessions run 85 minutes so there is room to get somewhere. Self-esteem and self-criticismThe internal voice that would never be aimed at a friend. We work on where it learned to speak that way and what it is trying to protect you from. ADHD supportStructure, focus and the self-esteem that takes a beating after years of being called careless. Note that Registered Psychotherapists support ADHD but do not assess or diagnose it. Substance use and addictionNon-judgmental support for changing a pattern, whatever stage you are at. We are not a medical detox facility, and we will say so and help you find one if that is what is needed. OCD and intrusive thoughtsIntrusive thoughts, checking, and the rituals that promise relief and then ask for more. Care informed by exposure and response prevention, the best-evidenced approach. Life transitionsA move, a separation, a career change, an empty house. Support for the in-between stretch when the old shape has gone and the new one has not arrived.

This is not a checklist you have to match. Plenty of people arrive saying only that something feels off, and that is a perfectly good place to start. Book a free 20-minute consult and we will help you name it together.

What to expect

What therapy in Barrie actually looks like

Not knowing what happens in the room is one of the most common reasons people put this off for another year. Here is the honest version, start to finish.

Before you arriveYou fill in a short intake form so your therapist is not starting from nothing. There is parking on site and a quiet waiting area, and you can arrive a few minutes early without it being awkward.
The first 55 minutesMostly your therapist listening and asking questions. What brought you now, what you have already tried, what you want to be different. You are not expected to have it organised or to start at the beginning.
What you leave withA sense of whether this person is a fit, and usually one thing to notice or try before next time. Not homework so much as an experiment.
How long it takesSome people come for six to eight sessions with a specific goal. Others stay longer. We review it with you rather than letting it drift, and you can stop or switch therapists at any point.

Sessions are 55 minutes for individuals and 85 minutes for couples and families, weekly to begin with for most people, then spaced out as things settle. Evening and weekend appointments are available at the Barrie office.

Choosing who to see

Psychologist, psychotherapist or counsellor?

People search all three interchangeably, and in Ontario they are not the same thing. Worth thirty seconds before you book anything, with us or anyone else.

Registered Psychotherapist (RP)What our Barrie team are. Regulated by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, trained in talk therapy, and required to work within their competence and under regular clinical supervision. RPs do not diagnose conditions and cannot prescribe medication.
PsychologistA separate profession with a separate college, able to perform psychological assessment and formal diagnosis. If an assessment or a diagnosis is what you need, that is a psychologist or a physician, and we will tell you so rather than take the booking.
Counsellor or therapistNot protected titles in Ontario, which means anyone may use them. That is precisely why the CRPO registration number on each of our profiles is worth checking, and why we publish them.

Carol McDowell is CRPO #10937 and Hannah Smith is CRPO #009501. Both are searchable on the CRPO public register, and we would rather you checked than took our word for it.

Common questions

Therapy in Barrie: your questions, answered

Where is the InnerSight Barrie office located?

Our Barrie office is at 111 Bradford St, Unit 207, Barrie, ON L4N 3A9, with free parking and a convenient central location. You can also see any of our therapists online from anywhere in Ontario.

Do I need a referral to see a psychotherapist in Barrie?

No referral is needed. You can book a free 20-minute consultation online at psychotherapyclinic.janeapp.com or call (905) 553-9507, and our friendly team will help match you with a therapist who fits your needs.

What kinds of therapy do you offer in Barrie?

Our Barrie team offers individual therapy, couples and relationship counselling, family therapy, child and youth therapy, group therapy, nature therapy and animal-assisted therapy, for adults, teens and children, in person or online.

How much does therapy in Barrie cost, and do you accept insurance?

The first 20-minute consultation is free. Individual sessions are $180 for 55 minutes (a new adult client's first session is typically a $245, 70-minute initial assessment), and couples and family sessions are $280 for 85 minutes. Most private insurance plans cover a portion of services from a Registered Psychotherapist, and reduced-fee sessions with supervised therapists in training are available.

Can I have my sessions online instead of in person?

Yes. Every Barrie therapist offers secure video sessions anywhere in Ontario, with the same evening and weekend availability. Many clients mix in-person and online to fit their week.

Is what I share confidential?

Yes. Our therapists are Registered Psychotherapists regulated by the CRPO, and what you share stays confidential within the standard legal limits, which your therapist explains clearly in your first session.

Do you offer therapy for anxiety or depression in Barrie?

Yes. Anxiety and low mood are the two most common reasons people contact us. Our Barrie therapists work with both in person on Bradford Street and online across Ontario, and you can also see any of our 24+ therapists online from Barrie if you want a particular specialty.

Is a psychotherapist the same as a psychologist?

No. Our Barrie team are Registered Psychotherapists, regulated by the CRPO and trained in talk therapy. Psychologists belong to a different college and can carry out formal psychological assessment and diagnosis, which Registered Psychotherapists do not do. If an assessment or diagnosis is what you need, we will say so and point you to the right professional.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies. Some people come for six to eight sessions with a specific goal in mind, and others stay longer or come back at different points in their life. Your therapist reviews progress with you rather than letting it run on, and there is no contract, so you can pause, stop or switch therapists whenever you want.

What happens in the first session?

Mostly listening. Your therapist will ask what brought you now, what you have already tried and what you would like to be different, and you are not expected to have it organised in advance. You leave with a sense of whether the fit feels right, and usually one small thing to notice before the next session.

Take the first step today

Getting started takes only a few minutes, and you can do it today. One free, confidential conversation is all it takes to begin. Together, we will help you find clarity and a direction that feels right for you.
