Healing alongside others

When trauma and addiction keep feeding each other

Living with both substance use and post-traumatic stress at the same time is one of the most challenging experiences a person can carry. Many people already sense that the ways they cope and their trauma are deeply linked. What they often do not have is a way to use that knowledge to create the changes they want and work so hard for.

That is what The Bridge is for. In the group, members are introduced to recent understanding of the brain and the nervous system, so what happens inside the addictive cycle becomes clear, and so does the way trauma and addiction work together to undo transformation. From there, you learn how to use safety to step out of that cycle, drawing on a skills-based, evidence-informed approach to trauma and addiction.

Common questions

The Bridge: your questions, answered

Who is The Bridge group for?

The Bridge is designed for adults who are living with both substance use and post-traumatic stress, and who recognise that the two are connected for them. If trauma and an addictive pattern keep feeding each other, this group is built for exactly that experience. If you are not sure it is the right fit, a free 20-minute consultation can help you decide.

What happens in the group?

Members are introduced to current understanding of the brain and nervous system, so the addiction and trauma cycle starts to make sense. From there the group practises using safety and grounding to interrupt that cycle, alongside open dialogue, active listening, and mindfulness and meditation skills to build self-awareness. The focus is on connection and practical skills, not pressure to share more than you want to.

Do I need a referral to join?

No referral is needed. To express interest, email info@psychotherapyclinic.ca or book a free 20-minute consultation online at psychotherapyclinic.janeapp.com or by calling (905) 553-9507. We will talk through whether the group is a good fit for you.

Is the group confidential?

Yes. The group is led by Registered Psychotherapists regulated by the CRPO, and confidentiality is a shared agreement among everyone who takes part. Your facilitator explains how privacy works, and the standard legal limits, before the group begins.

Is this medical detox or addiction treatment?

No. We are Registered Psychotherapists, not a medical or detox facility, and we cannot prescribe medication or supervise withdrawal. The group offers psychological support and skills. If you need to withdraw from a substance safely, we will help you connect with appropriate medical care first, and the group can support you alongside or after that.

Can I do individual therapy as well as the group?

Yes, and many people do both. The group adds connection and shared understanding, while individual sessions give you private, focused attention. We can help you combine addiction counselling and PTSD therapy with the group in your free consultation.
