You are not lazy or weak

Depression is not a character flaw

If getting through the day feels like wading through wet sand, if things you used to enjoy now feel grey, that is not a failure of willpower. Depression slows the mind and body down, dimming energy, motivation and pleasure, and then tells you it is your fault. It is not.

Canada’s Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) describes depression as one of the most common and most treatable mental health conditions. The point of therapy is not to talk you out of how you feel, but to help you gently rebuild energy, connection and meaning, one step at a time.

Working with a therapist, you make sense of what pulled you under, learn practical ways to interrupt the downward spiral, and slowly reconnect with the parts of life that have gone quiet. Some people also explore how the nervous system shifts into a kind of shutdown, and how to move back toward feeling engaged and alive.

In plain words

Depression therapy is evidence-based talk therapy that helps you understand what is keeping you low, rebuild energy and motivation through small steps, and reconnect with meaning and people. Most people meet weekly and start to feel a shift within the first month or two.

The one-small-step trick depression hates

Depression says wait until you feel motivated. But with low mood, action comes first and motivation follows, not the other way around. This is a taste of behavioural activation, a core depression tool. Pick a moment that sounds familiar.

1 · The thought

“I cannot get out of bed. I will get up when I feel like it.”

2 · Name the trap

This is the motivation trap.

Depression says wait until you feel motivated. But with low mood, motivation does not come first, action does. Waiting keeps you stuck.

3 · One tiny step

Pick the smallest possible action: sit up, put your feet on the floor, open the curtains. Just that. Not the whole day, one small move.

4 · The shift

“Doing one tiny thing, even badly, nudges the mood a little. Momentum is built one step at a time, not waited for.”

In sessions you build this around your own week, so the steps actually fit your life. Talk it through with a therapist, free for 20 minutes.

Is this you?

The many shapes of depression

Depression does not always look like sadness. If any of these feel familiar, therapy can help, and you do not need to be at rock bottom to start.

Persistent low moodA heaviness or emptiness that has settled in and will not lift on its own.
Loss of interestThings you used to love now feel flat, grey or like too much effort.
Exhaustion & sleep changesDrained no matter how much you rest, or sleeping far too much or too little.
Hopelessness & self-criticismA harsh inner voice and the sense that things will not get better.
High-functioning depressionHolding it together on the outside while feeling empty underneath.
After loss or a hard yearLow mood that set in after grief, a breakup, burnout or a big change. Depression with anxietyThe heavy and the wired at once, low and on edge at the same time. Depression after traumaWhen the low feeling is rooted in something painful that happened.

What your first session actually looks like

When energy is low, even booking feels like a lot. Here is exactly how those 55 minutes tend to go, so nothing is a mystery.

1
Minutes 0 to 10

Settling in

No couch, no interrogation. Your therapist welcomes you, explains confidentiality in plain language, and you set the pace. You share only what you want to.

2
Minutes 10 to 30

Understanding the low

Together you map when the heaviness shows up, what drains you, what little still helps, and what you have already tried. Saying it out loud often lifts a small weight on its own.

3
Minutes 30 to 50

Your first small step

Using a real example from your week, you try a behavioural-activation step together, the same idea as the demo above, so you leave with one doable thing rather than a mountain.

4
The last 5 minutes

Leaving with a plan

You agree on what you are working toward, roughly how many sessions it might take, and one gentle thing to try before next week.

How we work

Evidence-based, and matched to you

There is no single script for depression. Your therapist draws on approaches with strong research behind them and tailors them to you and your pace.

CBT & behavioural activationInterrupt the self-critical spiral and rebuild momentum through small, doable steps. IFS & deeper workMeet the parts of you carrying the pain, rather than fighting or numbing them.
Nervous-system regulationPolyvagal-informed tools to move out of shutdown and back toward energy and connection.
Trauma-informed throughoutBecause low mood often has roots, we treat the cause with care, at a pace you control.

Common questions

Depression therapy in Vaughan: your questions, answered

Do I need a referral for depression therapy in Vaughan?

No referral is needed. You can book a free 20-minute consultation online at psychotherapyclinic.janeapp.com or call (905) 553-9507. Most people have their first full session within a week.

How long does depression therapy take?

It varies with your goals, but many people notice a meaningful lift within about 6 to 12 sessions, and depression responds well to therapy. You and your therapist review progress together and adjust as you go, and you are never locked into a fixed number.

Can therapy help if I have felt this way for years?

Yes. Long-standing or recurring depression is very treatable, even when it feels permanent. Therapy works at a pace that suits you, building small, durable changes rather than expecting an overnight fix.

Do I need medication for depression?

Not necessarily. Many people improve significantly through therapy alone. Our therapists are Registered Psychotherapists and do not prescribe medication, but we are glad to work alongside your family doctor or psychiatrist if medication is part of your care.

Can I do depression therapy online?

Yes. We offer secure video sessions anywhere in Ontario, plus in-person sessions in Woodbridge, Vaughan and Barrie. Online sessions remove the energy it takes to travel, which can help a lot when motivation is low. Evenings and weekends are available.

What if my depression comes with anxiety or trauma?

That is very common, and we work with the whole picture. Depression often travels with anxiety, past trauma, grief or burnout, and your therapist tailors the approach so these are addressed together rather than in isolation.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes. Our therapists are Registered Psychotherapists regulated by the CRPO, and everything you share stays confidential within the standard legal limits, which your therapist explains clearly in your first session.

What happens in the free 20-minute consultation?

You talk with a therapist about how you have been feeling and what you would like to change. They explain how therapy could help and answer your questions. No pressure, no commitment, and booking takes about 2 minutes.
