The pattern is the problem, not the people

Strengthen your relationship and reconnect

Most couples who reach out are two people who still care about each other and have just lost the thread somewhere along the way. The same arguments keep circling back, conversations turn into silence, and the closeness that used to feel easy now takes effort.

Couples therapy in Vaughan, Woodbridge or Barrie gives you a calm, guided space to slow that down. Working with a Registered Psychotherapist, you learn what is really driving the disconnection, practise new ways of talking and listening, and work to rebuild the trust and intimacy that brought you together in the first place.

You do not have to be in crisis to come. Many couples simply want to communicate better, navigate a big life change as a team, or feel close again. Wherever you are starting from, you are welcome here.

Try it yourself

Stop the "same old fight" in its tracks

Most recurring arguments are not really about the topic. They follow a pattern, and once you can see the pattern, you can step out of it. Pick a moment that sounds familiar and see how a small shift changes the conversation.

1 · The trigger

It is late, you are tired, and the same disagreement flares up again.

↓
2 · The old loop

“You never listen to me. Why do I even bother?”

↓
3 · What is underneath

The real message: I feel unimportant to you.

Criticism is often a clumsy way of asking for closeness. Naming the softer feeling underneath gives your partner something they can actually respond to.

↓
4 · The repair

“When you look at your phone while I am talking, I feel like I do not matter. I would love your full attention for a minute.”

This is one small example of the kind of shift couples practise in sessions, matched to your relationship. Talk it through with a therapist, free for 20 minutes.

How we help

What couples come to work on

Whatever is straining your relationship, you do not have to untangle it alone. Here are some of the things we help couples navigate, with a focus on evidence-based, client-centred care.

Communication issuesFrequent misunderstandings or feeling unheard? We help you build active listening and empathy, and learn practical communication tools for everyday use.
Conflict resolutionWhen arguments repeat with no resolution, we provide structured ways to navigate disagreements and help partners find compromise and rebuild trust.
Trust & betrayalAfter infidelity or other betrayals, we offer a safe, guided space to process what happened and tools to rebuild trust, accountability and stronger patterns.
Intimacy problemsWhen physical or emotional intimacy fades, we help partners express their needs and rebuild closeness, addressing both sides of connection.
Life transitionsAdjusting to marriage, parenthood, or relocation? We offer emotional support through change and strengthen your ability to adapt as a team.
Emotional distanceFeeling more like roommates than partners? We help rebuild emotional closeness and vulnerability so you can reconnect through shared understanding.
Financial stressDisagreements about money are rarely just about money. We improve communication around financial values and build teamwork in decision-making.
Family dynamicsBlended-family stress, parenting disagreements or extended-family tension? We strengthen boundaries and promote understanding across family roles.

How we work

Evidence-based approaches, matched to your relationship

There is no single script for a healthy relationship. Your therapist draws on evidence-based, relationship-focused methods and adapts them to your goals, your history, and your pace.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)Helps you understand and break the negative cycle that pulls you apart, so you can move toward each other instead of away.
Imago Relationship TherapyA structured, dialogue-based approach that turns conflict into a path toward deeper understanding and healing.
The Gottman MethodPractical, research-based tools for managing conflict, building friendship, and creating shared meaning as a couple.
Attachment & Polyvagal-informedWe work with attachment needs and the nervous system to help partners feel safe enough to be open and connected again.

InnerSight was founded by Svetlana Antonyshyn, RP, on the belief that healing should centre the people in the room, not a label. More about our approach.

Common questions

Couples therapy in Vaughan: your questions, answered

How do I know if we need couples therapy?

If you and your partner are experiencing recurring arguments, emotional distance, difficulty communicating, or a breakdown in trust, therapy can help. You do not need to be in crisis to benefit. Many couples come to us simply wanting to strengthen their connection and learn better ways to navigate disagreements. A free 20-minute consultation can help you decide if it is the right step.

What happens in a couples therapy session?

In your first session, your therapist will get to know both partners, understand your concerns, and help you set goals for therapy. From there, sessions typically involve guided conversations where you learn new communication tools, explore patterns in your relationship, and practice skills like active listening and conflict resolution. Your first session is 90 minutes; ongoing sessions are 85 minutes, in person at our Vaughan, Woodbridge, or Barrie locations, or online.

What if my partner does not want to come to therapy?

It is common for one partner to feel hesitant. You are welcome to start with individual therapy to work on your own relationship goals, communication skills, and emotional regulation. Often, when one partner begins making positive changes, the other becomes more open to joining. Our therapists can also help you find ways to approach the conversation with your partner.

How long does couples therapy take?

Every relationship is different. Some couples find meaningful progress in 8 to 12 sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support. Your therapist will work with you to create a plan based on your specific goals and revisit progress regularly. The pace is always guided by what feels right for you and your partner.

What types of therapy do you use for couples?

Our therapists draw from several evidence-based approaches depending on your needs, including Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Imago Relationship Therapy, Attachment Theory, and the Gottman Method. We also use Polyvagal Theory-informed techniques to help partners rebuild a sense of safety and emotional connection. Your therapist will tailor the approach to your unique situation.

How much does couples therapy cost, and is it covered by insurance?

Ongoing couples sessions are $280 for 85 minutes, and your first session runs 90 minutes at the same price. We also offer a free 20-minute consultation to help match you with the right therapist before you commit. Sessions are not covered by OHIP, but most private insurance plans cover a portion of psychotherapy fees. We offer direct billing with Sun Life, SSQ and Green Shield. You can book a consult at psychotherapyclinic.janeapp.com or call (905) 553-9507.
