Feeling lost is not a failure

A bigger question is not a breakdown

Questions about meaning rarely arrive when everything is falling apart. More often they surface at a turning point, or right after you reach a goal you were sure would feel different. The promotion lands, the milestone passes, the life you built is in place, and a quiet voice asks, is this it.

That question is not a sign that something is wrong with you. It is an invitation. It usually means you have outgrown an old story about what matters, and you have not yet written the next one. The discomfort is the doorway, not a flaw in you.

Therapy for purpose and meaning gives you room to explore those questions with support, instead of pushing them down or waiting for them to pass. Together you reconnect with your own values, and take small, real steps toward a life that feels like yours again.

In plain words

Purpose and meaning therapy is supportive, evidence-based talk therapy for the feeling that something is missing. It helps you understand the questions underneath, reconnect with what genuinely matters to you, and move toward it one workable step at a time. No agenda, no shame.

When you have everything, but still feel empty

The thoughts that feel like a dead end are often the start of something. Pick the one that sounds most like you and see it from a different angle.

The thought

“Is this all there is?”

A different angle

“Asking the question is the start of a more meaningful chapter, not a crisis.”

In sessions you explore these questions around your own life, gently and at your pace. Talk it through with a therapist, free for 20 minutes.

Is this you?

What we work with

Questions of meaning take many shapes. Whatever yours looks like, you do not have to sit with it alone.

Feeling lost or directionlessThe sense that you are drifting, without a clear sense of where you are headed or why.
Emptiness despite successWhen life looks good on paper, but inside it feels strangely flat and hollow.
Existential questionsThe bigger 'what is the point' questions that are hard to talk about anywhere else.
Midlife reflectionReassessing the path you are on, and whether it still fits who you have become.
Disconnection from your valuesLiving by a script you inherited, and losing touch with what actually matters to you.
Questions of meaning or spiritualityWrestling with belief, mortality or your place in the world, on your own terms.
Low motivation and driftWhen nothing pulls at you the way it used to, and the days blur together.
Reinventing yourselfStepping into a new chapter and figuring out who you want to be in it.
No fixed agenda, no pressure

What your first session actually looks like

Bringing the big questions to a stranger can feel strange. It does not have to. Here is how those 55 minutes tend to go.

1
Minutes 0 to 10

Settling in

No script and no pressure to have it figured out. Your therapist welcomes you, explains confidentiality, and makes clear this is simply a space to think out loud.

2
Minutes 10 to 35

Exploring what is stirring

Together you follow the questions that brought you here, the sense of something missing, and the moments when life feels most, or least, like yours.

3
Minutes 35 to 50

Naming what matters

You start to surface your own values, what you want more of, and one small direction worth leaning into, so you leave with a thread to follow.

4
The last 5 minutes

Leaving with a direction

You agree on what you would like to explore next and one small thing to notice or reflect on before your next session.

How we work

Approaches that help you build meaning

There is no single formula for a meaningful life. Your therapist draws on evidence-based approaches and tailors them to you.

Existential & meaning-centredFacing the big questions about purpose, freedom and mortality, and finding your own answers.
Acceptance & values (ACT)Clarify what you truly value and take committed action toward it, even alongside doubt.
Narrative & meaning-makingRe-author the story you tell about your life, so it reads as yours and points somewhere.
Person-centred supportA warm, non-judgmental space that trusts you to find your own direction at your own pace.

Common questions

Purpose and meaning therapy in Vaughan: your questions, answered

Is feeling empty even a reason to see a therapist?

Yes. A quiet sense that something is missing, even when life looks fine on paper, is a valid and very common reason to reach out. You do not need to be in crisis to deserve support and a space to reflect.

Do I need a referral for purpose and meaning therapy in Vaughan?

No referral is needed. You can book a free 20-minute consultation online at psychotherapyclinic.janeapp.com or call (905) 553-9507. Most people have their first full session within a week.

Is this religious or spiritual?

It can include spirituality if that matters to you, but it does not have to. We follow your values and your worldview, whatever they are, and there is no agenda about what you should believe.

How is this different from depression therapy?

There is overlap, and questions of meaning often go alongside low mood. If low mood is the main issue we will say so, and we can support both the feeling and the deeper questions at the same time.

Will you tell me what my purpose is?

No. We do not hand you an answer. We help you discover and build a sense of purpose from what genuinely matters to you, one small, workable step at a time.

Is it available online across Ontario?

Yes. We offer secure video sessions anywhere in Ontario, plus in-person sessions in Vaughan, Woodbridge and Barrie. Evenings and weekends are available.

How much does it cost and is it covered?

The first 20-minute consultation is free. Individual sessions are $180 for 55 minutes. There is no OHIP coverage, but most private insurance plans cover a portion of services from a Registered Psychotherapist, and reduced-fee sessions are available.

What happens in the first session?

An open, unhurried conversation about what feels missing and what you would like more of. There is no fixed agenda and no pressure, just space to explore what is stirring with someone alongside you.
