For you, not just your child

Support for the parent, not just the child

Parenting counselling is counselling for you. The stress, the second-guessing, the power struggles that turn bedtime or the school run into a battle. It is not about being told what you are doing wrong. It is about being supported, so the hardest parts of parenting feel more manageable.

When you are running on empty, even small moments can tip into shouting or shutting down, and the guilt that follows can be heavy. You learn to respond instead of react, to read what your child is really asking for, and to reconnect when things have felt strained.

This page is about supporting you. If you are looking for therapy for your child or teen directly, our child and youth therapy can help. Many families do both at once.

In plain words

Parenting counselling is practical, evidence-based support that helps you understand your child, set calm and consistent boundaries, and respond instead of react, so home feels warmer and you feel steadier. Judgment-free, and you keep the tools for life.

What is underneath the behaviour?

Most tough behaviour is a need that has not found words yet. This is a taste of how we work in sessions. Pick a moment that sounds familiar.

What you see

“Defiance and power struggles.”

What is underneath, and a calm response

Often a need for control. Offering small, safe choices lowers the temperature.

In sessions we decode the patterns in your own home, so the meltdowns make sense and you know what to try next. Talk it through with a therapist, free for 20 minutes.

Is this you?

What we work with

From the early years to the teen years, parenting brings challenges no one prepares you for. Whatever yours look like right now, there is support for them.

Defiance and power strugglesWhen every request turns into a battle and you feel like you are losing the war.
Tantrums and big emotionsMeltdowns that overwhelm your child, and you, before anyone can think straight.
Anxiety in your childWorry, clinginess or fears, and not knowing how to soothe without feeding them.
Screen-time and boundariesHolding a limit that sticks, without the daily fight over devices.
Co-parenting and staying consistentGetting on the same page so your child gets a steady, predictable message.
Parenting after separation or divorceSupporting your child through change while finding your footing in a new normal.
Connecting with a teenagerWhen the door is closing and you want to stay close without pushing them away.
Parental guilt, overwhelm and burnoutWhen you are depleted and the feeling of never doing enough never quite lifts.
No judgment, no lectures

What your first session actually looks like

Asking for help with parenting can feel like admitting you are failing. You are not. Here is exactly how those 55 minutes tend to go.

1
Minutes 0 to 10

Settling in

No blame, no judgment. Your therapist welcomes you, explains confidentiality, and makes clear you are here for support and tools, not to be graded as a parent.

2
Minutes 10 to 35

Understanding your family

Together you look at your child, your home, and what is hardest right now, so the picture makes sense and you feel genuinely understood.

3
Minutes 35 to 50

Your first practical tools

Using a real example from your week, you and your therapist shape one or two approaches to try, so you leave with something usable, not just theory.

4
The last 5 minutes

Leaving with next steps

You agree on one or two practical next steps to try before next week, at a pace that fits your family.

How we work

Warm connection, calm structure

Parenting support works best when it strengthens your bond with your child and gives you steady, consistent tools. Your therapist tailors the approach to your family.

Attachment-based parentingStrengthen the secure connection that helps your child feel safe enough to settle.
Emotion coachingHelp your child name and ride big feelings, so meltdowns get shorter over time.
Positive, consistent boundariesSet limits that are warm and firm, so kids feel secure and you feel less reactive.
Parent coaching and supportA steady, evidence-based sounding board for the decisions and doubts you carry.

Common questions

Parenting counselling in Vaughan: your questions, answered

Is this counselling for me or for my child?

This supports you as a parent. We help with the stress, the second-guessing and the day-to-day challenges of raising your child. For therapy for your child or teen directly, see our child and youth therapy page.

Do I need a referral for parenting counselling in Vaughan?

No referral is needed. You can book a free 20-minute consultation online at psychotherapyclinic.janeapp.com or call (905) 553-9507. Most parents have their first full session within a week.

Does needing parenting support mean I am a bad parent?

Not at all. Reaching out for tools and a calmer home is one of the most caring things a parent can do. There is no manual for this, and wanting support is a sign of how much you care.

Can you help co-parents who disagree?

Yes. We help with consistency and communication so children get a steadier message from both homes, including after separation or divorce. Sessions can be individual or together, whatever works best for your family.

My teenager will not talk to me. Can you help?

Yes. We work on connection and communication so conversations feel safer for both of you, and so your teen feels heard rather than managed. Small shifts in how you respond often reopen the door.

Is parenting counselling available online across Ontario?

Yes. We offer secure video sessions anywhere in Ontario, plus in-person sessions in Vaughan, Woodbridge and Barrie. Online works well for busy parents and you can practice new skills at home where they actually matter. Evenings and weekends are available.

How much does it cost and is it covered?

The first 20-minute consultation is free. Individual sessions are $180 for 55 minutes. There is no OHIP coverage, but most private insurance plans cover a portion of services from a Registered Psychotherapist, and reduced-fee sessions are available.

What happens in the first session?

It is a relaxed conversation about your family and what is hardest right now. Your therapist gets to know your situation, and you leave with one or two practical next steps you can use straight away.
