OCD works in a cycle: an intrusive thought or fear shows up, the anxiety spikes, and a compulsion (washing, checking, counting, reassurance-seeking, mental reviewing) brings a few seconds of relief. That relief is the hook. It quietly teaches your brain that the fear was real, so the cycle comes back, stronger and more demanding.
Canada’s Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) describes OCD as a common and treatable condition. The goal of therapy is not to get rid of every thought, which no one can do, but to change your relationship with them so they stop running the show.
The most effective treatment is a form of CBT called Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). With a therapist, you gradually face what OCD fears while resisting the ritual, and learn that the anxiety fades on its own. It is done gently, at a pace you set, and it works.
OCD therapy is evidence-based talk therapy, usually CBT with ERP, that helps you break the obsession-compulsion loop, tolerate uncertainty, and take back the time and freedom OCD has stolen. It is structured, practical, and paced entirely with you.
The compulsion feels like the solution, but it is what keeps OCD alive. This is a taste of ERP, the most effective OCD treatment. Pick a loop that sounds familiar.
“My hands do not feel clean. I have to wash them again, just to be sure.”
This is the OCD loop, not a real need.
OCD floods you with doubt, then offers a ritual that brings a few seconds of relief. That relief is the trap: it teaches the brain the fear was real, so it returns stronger.
With support, you delay or skip the wash and let the discomfort be there, longer each time, at a pace you agree to. You do not have to do this alone.
“The anxiety rose, peaked, and fell on its own, without the ritual. Each time I ride it out, OCD’s grip loosens.”
A trained therapist guides ERP so it is challenging but never overwhelming. Start with a free 20-minute consult.
OCD is far more than being tidy. It shows up in many forms, and all of them respond to the same evidence-based approach.
A worry about ERP is that you will be thrown in the deep end. You will not. Here is exactly how those 55 minutes tend to go.
Your therapist welcomes you and explains confidentiality in plain language. No exposures today. You will not be asked to touch anything or face a fear in the first session.
Together you name the obsessions, the compulsions and the triggers, with zero judgment, even for the thoughts you have never said out loud.
Your therapist explains how ERP works and you build a gentle ladder together, starting with the easiest steps. You consent to every step before it happens.
You agree on what you are working toward and one manageable thing to practice, never more than you feel ready for.
ERP is the most effective OCD treatment, and your therapist tailors it to you and your pace, alongside other evidence-based supports.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is the most effective therapy for OCD. You gradually face triggers while resisting the compulsion, so the anxiety can settle on its own. It is always paced with you, you consent to each step, and nothing is ever forced or done without warning.
No. Intrusive thoughts are extremely common, and OCD latches onto the thoughts that horrify you most precisely because they go against your values. Having a thought is not the same as wanting it or acting on it. We treat these thoughts with zero judgment.
Many people see meaningful change within a few months of consistent ERP, though it varies with the severity and how long OCD has been present. You and your therapist review progress together and adjust the plan as you go.
Not necessarily. ERP-based therapy is highly effective on its own for many people. Our therapists are Registered Psychotherapists and do not prescribe medication, but we are glad to work alongside your physician or psychiatrist if medication is part of your care.

That is very common, and we work with the whole picture. OCD often travels with anxiety or depression, and your therapist tailors the approach so these are addressed together rather than in isolation.
