Change asks a lot of us

A new chapter can be exciting and disorienting at once

Transitions rarely arrive as one clean feeling. A change can stir grief, relief, fear and excitement all at the same time, sometimes within the same hour. That mix is normal, not a sign that something is wrong with you. Even the changes you wanted and worked for can leave you feeling untethered.

Part of what makes transition hard is letting go. Stepping into something new often means releasing how things used to be, a role, a routine, a version of yourself that no longer fits. That loss is real even when the new chapter is welcome, and it deserves space rather than rushing past it.

Counselling gives you steady support to process the ending and step into what is next, on your own timeline. No pressure to have it figured out, just a calm place to make sense of where you have been and explore who you are becoming.

In plain words

Life transitions counselling is warm, evidence-based talk therapy for the in-between. It helps you grieve what is ending, find your footing in the uncertainty, and reconnect with what matters, so the next chapter feels like yours.

The shape of change

The space between who you were and who you are becoming

Transition rarely moves in a straight line. Wherever you are right now is a normal part of it. Tap each stage for a grounding reframe.

Stage 1 · An ending

Every change begins with letting go of how things were. Grief and relief can live side by side, and both are okay.

Wherever you land on this map, you do not have to navigate it alone. Talk it through with a therapist, free for 20 minutes.

No agenda but yours

What your first session actually looks like

No pressure to have the answers. It begins as a warm conversation about what is changing and what you need. Here is how those 55 minutes tend to go.

1
Minutes 0 to 10

Settling in

Your therapist welcomes you, explains confidentiality, and makes clear there is nothing you need to prepare. You set the pace.

2
Minutes 10 to 30

What is changing

Together you talk through the transition you are in, what feels lost, what feels uncertain, and the feelings that have been hardest to hold.

3
Minutes 30 to 50

What would help

You begin to name what steadier would look like, and your therapist offers a first way to ground yourself in the meantime.

4
The last 5 minutes

Leaving with direction

You agree on what you are working toward and a gentle next step, with no obligation to know the whole path yet.

How we work

Steady support, made meaningful

Transition work is most helpful when it honours the ending and helps you build toward what is next. Your therapist tailors the approach to you.

Person-centred supportA warm, non-judgmental space where you lead and your therapist walks alongside you.
Meaning-making and narrativeMake sense of your story, so the chapter that is closing connects to the one beginning.
Acceptance and values workMake room for hard feelings while reconnecting with what truly matters to you now.
Trauma-informed careWhen change came suddenly or hard, a gentle, paced approach that keeps you safe.

Common questions

Life transitions counselling in Vaughan: your questions, answered

Is it normal to struggle with a change I chose?

Completely. Even welcome change involves loss, and mixed feelings are normal. Excitement and grief can sit side by side. Counselling gives you room to feel both without judging yourself for it.

Do I need a referral for life transitions counselling in Vaughan?

No referral is needed. You can book a free 20-minute consultation online at psychotherapyclinic.janeapp.com or call (905) 553-9507. Most people have their first full session within a week.

How is this different from grief counselling?

There is real overlap, since most transitions carry some loss. For the loss of a loved one specifically, our grief and bereavement counselling may be the better fit, and we are happy to guide you to whichever feels right.

Can you help with a midlife or identity shift?

Yes. Questions of who you are and what matters now are exactly what this work is for. Together we make sense of where you have been and explore what you want to carry forward.

How long will I need support?

It varies. Some people come for a focused stretch around a single transition, others stay longer to work through deeper change. You and your therapist review progress together and adjust the pace as you go.

Is it available online across Ontario?

Yes. We offer secure video sessions anywhere in Ontario, plus in-person sessions in Vaughan, Woodbridge and Barrie. Evenings and weekends are available.

How much does it cost and is it covered?

The first 20-minute consultation is free, and individual sessions are $180 for 55 minutes. There is no OHIP coverage, but most private insurance plans cover a portion of services from a Registered Psychotherapist.

What happens in the first session?

A relaxed conversation about what is changing and what would help you feel steadier. There is no agenda but yours, and no pressure to have it all figured out before you arrive.
