If you keep ending up in the same painful place, the same argument, the same self-doubt, the same wall, there is usually a reason underneath. Psychodynamic therapy helps you understand those patterns so you are no longer run by them.

Psychodynamic therapy is a form of talk therapy that looks beneath your symptoms to the patterns underneath them, the ones you tend to repeat without quite knowing why. It explores how earlier experiences and important relationships shaped templates for how you feel, choose, and connect, templates that may have made sense once but now keep you stuck.
It grew out of the tradition Freud began, but modern psychodynamic therapy is not the couch-and-dream-analysis stereotype. Today it is usually face-to-face, collaborative, and often short-term and focused. The aim is insight: bringing a pattern into the light so you finally have a choice about it, rather than being run by it on autopilot.
It is also one of the better-studied talking therapies, with research suggesting its benefits can keep growing even after therapy ends, as the self-understanding you build keeps doing its quiet work.
Psychodynamic therapy helps you understand the why behind your patterns, the recurring feelings, relationships, and reactions, so you can change them at the root instead of only managing the symptoms.
Most of us have a loop we fall into without meaning to. Understanding where it comes from is what loosens its grip. Pick one that feels familiar.
“No matter what I achieve, a quiet voice says it isn’t enough, and that I’m not enough.”
Together you trace it back, often to a time when love or approval felt conditional, and you learned that being “good enough” was something you had to keep earning.
“Once I saw where the voice came from, it lost its authority. I don’t have to earn my worth anymore.”

Psychodynamic therapy is flexible and broadly studied. It is especially powerful when distress is tied to long-standing patterns, emotions, and relationships.
Psychodynamic therapy is one of several therapy approaches we offer. For some specific, present-focused goals another method may fit better, and in your free consult we will help you choose.
The evidence here is genuinely strong. A few of the headline findings, with sources.
A landmark review found psychodynamic therapy produces large benefits, and notably, that those benefits often continued to grow after therapy ended.
A 2017 meta-analysis found psychodynamic therapy as effective as other empirically supported treatments, including cognitive behavioural therapy.
A Cochrane review of 33 randomized trials, over 2,000 people, found short-term psychodynamic therapy significantly more helpful than control conditions for common mental health concerns.
Short-term psychodynamic therapy showed large gains for people’s main concerns that were stable or still improving at follow-up.
To be fair and accurate: psychodynamic therapy is comparable to, not better than, other strong therapies, and no therapy promises a particular result. What the research does suggest is that this kind of deep, pattern-focused work tends to keep paying off long after the sessions end.
An open, thoughtful conversation, not worksheets. You set the direction, and your therapist helps you notice what you might not see on your own.
How you relate to your therapist often mirrors patterns from the rest of your life, which makes the room a safe place to understand and gently shift them.
You and your therapist explore what brings you in and the history around it, with curiosity and no pressure to have it all figured out.
Over time, recurring themes come into focus, in your relationships, your feelings, even in the therapy itself, and you start to see the threads.
As understanding deepens, the old automatic reactions loosen, and you gain real freedom to respond in new ways, in and out of session.
Our therapists use psychodynamic depth where it helps, and blend it with other evidence-based methods so the work fits your goals.

Psychodynamic therapy is a form of talk therapy that looks beneath your symptoms to the patterns underneath them, especially the ones you repeat without realizing it. It explores how past experiences and important relationships shape how you feel and relate today, so that understanding those patterns gives you the freedom to respond differently.
Yes. A landmark review in American Psychologist found psychodynamic therapy produces large benefits comparable to other well-supported therapies, and a 2017 meta-analysis found it as effective as treatments such as cognitive behavioural therapy. A Cochrane review of 33 randomized trials with over 2,000 people found short-term psychodynamic therapy significantly more helpful than control conditions for common mental health concerns.
Not necessarily. The couch-and-dream-analysis image is outdated. Modern psychodynamic therapy is usually face-to-face and collaborative, and it can be short-term and focused, often around 16 to 30 sessions, or longer for deeper, long-standing difficulties. We tailor the length to you.
CBT focuses largely on changing present thoughts and behaviours, often with structured exercises. Psychodynamic therapy focuses more on understanding the deeper patterns and emotions driving your distress, and uses the relationship with your therapist as a window into them. Research finds both are effective, and many people benefit from elements of each.
Research suggests they can. A notable finding is that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy often continue to grow after therapy ends, as the self-understanding you build keeps working for you. Like any therapy, individual results vary, but the aim is lasting change, not just short-term relief.
Sessions are an open, reflective conversation rather than worksheets. You might explore where a current struggle echoes something older, notice how you protect yourself from difficult feelings, or see a relationship pattern repeating. Your therapist pays attention to what unfolds between you, because the relationship itself becomes a safe place to understand and shift those patterns.
