What it is

The same therapy, without the drive.

Online therapy is a regular psychotherapy session held over secure video instead of across a room. Same therapist, same approaches, same 55 minutes. It removes the commute, the waiting room and the childcare puzzle, which for many people is the difference between starting therapy and putting it off another year.

Where online shines

Busy schedules and evening sessions after the kids are down. Living outside the GTA, from Barrie to Ottawa to Thunder Bay. Mobility or health limits that make travel hard. Social anxiety that makes an office visit feel like a hurdle. Continuing with your therapist when you move, travel or change jobs.

Where in-person may fit better

Some people simply settle more deeply in a room with their therapist. Younger children often do better with in-person play therapy. And for some higher-acuity situations, your therapist may recommend in-person care or additional supports. We offer both, so you never have to choose blind, and you can switch anytime.

How a session works

Before your appointment you receive a secure link by email. At session time you click it from any device with a camera. There is nothing to install and nothing to configure. Your therapist joins you in an encrypted video room on Jane, a platform built for Canadian healthcare providers. Sessions are never recorded.

Private on your side too

Headphones, a closed door, or even a parked car make your side of the conversation private. Your therapist will help you find a setup that works, and if privacy at home is part of what brings you to therapy, tell us, and we will plan around it together.

What the research says

Multiple meta-analyses have found that psychotherapy delivered by videoconference produces outcomes comparable to in-person treatment for common concerns such as anxiety and depression, including a 2021 review by Batastini and colleagues in Clinical Psychology Review and a 2021 meta-analysis by Fernandez and colleagues in Clinical Psychology & Psychotherapy.

Honest note: research compares averages, and you are not an average. If online sessions do not feel right after a few weeks, say so. Switching to in-person, or to a different therapist, is normal and easy, and your therapist will not take it personally.
Getting started

Three steps, all from home.

1

Book a free consultation

Twenty minutes by phone or video. Tell us what is going on, and we will suggest a therapist or two we think would fit. Usually within 24 hours.

2

Meet your therapist online

Your first full session runs 55 to 90 minutes depending on the type of therapy. You click a link, your therapist does the rest. You do not have to arrive with answers.

3

Continue at your pace

Weekly, every other week, or whatever rhythm fits. Mix online and in-office sessions freely. If the fit is not right, we help you switch, no friction and no shame.

Your online team

Therapists who practise online every day.

Every InnerSight therapist offers online sessions. These three practise exclusively online, so video is not their backup plan, it is their craft.

Questions

Online therapy, answered.

Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?
For most people and most concerns, research finds therapy delivered by secure video produces outcomes comparable to in-person sessions. What matters most is the fit with your therapist and showing up consistently. In some situations, such as higher-acuity needs or when a client simply feels better in a room, in-person can be the better choice, and we offer both.
What do I need for an online session?
A phone, tablet or computer with a camera and microphone, a reliable internet connection, and a private space where you feel comfortable talking. Headphones help with both privacy and audio quality. A few minutes before your session, you simply click the secure link we send you. There is nothing to install.
Is online therapy private and secure?
Yes. Sessions run on Jane, a secure, encrypted video platform built for Canadian healthcare providers. Sessions are not recorded, and the same confidentiality rules that protect an in-person session apply online. Private and confidential, with the limited exceptions Ontario law requires, which your therapist explains in your first session.
Does insurance cover online therapy?
Most private insurance plans that cover psychotherapy with a Registered Psychotherapist cover online sessions the same way they cover in-person sessions. We can bill Sun Life, SSQ and Green Shield directly, and we provide receipts for all other insurers. Psychotherapy is not covered by OHIP.
Who can I see online?
Every InnerSight therapist offers online sessions, and several of our Registered Psychotherapists practise exclusively online. You can be matched based on what you are working through, your schedule and your preferences, exactly as you would for in-person therapy.
Can I do online therapy from anywhere?
You need to be located in Ontario at the time of your session, because our therapists are registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. Within Ontario, you can join from home, work, your car or anywhere private, whether you live in Vaughan or a community hours from our offices.
Can I switch between online and in-person sessions?
Yes. Many clients mix both, coming into our Woodbridge, Maple or Barrie office when it suits them and meeting online when life is busy. If your therapist practises online only and you decide you want in-person sessions, we will help you transition to another therapist with your consent.
How do I get started with online therapy?
Book a free 20-minute consultation at psychotherapyclinic.janeapp.com or call (905) 553-9507. You will briefly tell us what is going on, and we will suggest a therapist or two we think would fit. No referral is needed.
