Gottman Method couples therapy in Vaughan
You can predict the next ninety seconds of the argument before it happens, and so can your partner. Gottman Method couples therapy in Vaughan begins by mapping that pattern in detail, including what each of you does in the first three minutes, and then works on the parts you can actually change on a Tuesday night at home. Two of our therapists have training in the method.

What does Gottman Method couples therapy in Vaughan actually involve?
The Gottman Method is a structured approach to couples therapy that begins with a formal assessment of your relationship, including one individual meeting each and a written questionnaire. Sessions then focus on observable behaviour during conflict, on repairing the friendship underneath it, and on skills you practise at home between appointments.
John and Julie Gottman built this approach out of decades of watching couples disagree in a laboratory apartment, coding facial movement, heart rate and the exact words people reached for. What came out of all that observation is a therapy with an unusual shape. Assessment comes first, then the observable behaviour that shows up during conflict, then specific skills you practise between appointments.
The first two or three appointments are largely assessment. You come in together, each of you is seen alone once, and both of you complete a long written questionnaire covering friendship, conflict style, trust and shared meaning. Your therapist then says something specific back to you, for example that criticism is rare between you while stonewalling is constant, or that the friendship underneath is in better condition than either of you assumed.
The structure does not suit every couple, and we would rather say that here than in the fine print. If one partner is afraid of the other, or if there is coercive control or ongoing violence, working on conflict in the same room is not safe or appropriate, and individual support comes first. It is also the wrong starting point when one person has already privately decided to leave, or when the pressing issue is one partner's untreated trauma, addiction or depression, which usually needs its own individual therapy before or alongside couples work.
Couples who take to this method tend to be the ones who want something concrete to do. There is homework, the skills have names, and progress shows up in whether Sunday's argument went differently rather than in how the session felt. Partners who need the room to stay slow while the frightened thing gets said out loud are often better served by Emotionally Focused Therapy.
Which InnerSight psychotherapists are trained in the Gottman Method?
Hanna Anderson (CRPO 17979, Woodbridge and Maple) and Valeria Matei (CRPO 14052, Woodbridge) both hold Gottman Method training and use it in their couples work, alongside the other approaches they are trained in. Neither holds Gottman Institute certification, and we will not call them certified Gottman therapists, because that term means something specific and they have not been given it.
In Ontario, that certification is not required in order to practise the method. What is required is appropriate training and demonstrated competence, which is what they have. Both are registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, and you can check either registration number on the College’s public register in about a minute.

The Four Horsemen, and what to say instead
Gottman's observational work singled out four conflict habits that show up again and again in relationships that later come apart. Each one has a specific replacement. Click a card to see the line, then the move that goes with it.
"You never think about anyone but yourself."
That aims at who your partner is rather than what they did. The replacement is a gentle start up: name the situation, name your feeling, then ask for one positive thing. "When the bins were still full this morning, I felt like I was handling the house alone. Could you take them out on Tuesday nights?"
What Gottman Method couples therapy is used for
You have had this argument about the phone, the dishes, or your mother so many times that neither of you can remember how it starts. You only remember how it ends.
You bring something up at ten at night and your partner says they are too tired to do this now and walks into the kitchen. You follow, and it gets louder.
The disclosure happened weeks or months ago and the questions have not stopped. One of you needs to keep asking, and the other has run out of ways to answer.
There is no shouting. There is a shared calendar, a fair division of chores, and a long stretch where neither of you has asked the other a real question.
One of you is tracking the naps, the vaccinations and the daycare waitlist, and is quietly furious that this is not shared. The other feels blamed for jobs they did not know were theirs.
You catch yourself making a joke at your partner's expense in front of friends. Everyone laughs, and neither of you mentions it on the drive home.
One of you says sorry and the other hears an excuse with an apology attached. The repair gets offered and slides straight past.
Sex, or even sitting close on the sofa, ended at some point that neither of you can date. Raising it now feels riskier than leaving it where it is.
How strong is the evidence behind Gottman couples therapy?
Couples therapy itself is well established. The Gottman Method specifically is promising rather than settled: the trials below are encouraging, but they are small, several involve people connected to the Gottman Institute, and there is no Cochrane review or large independent trial of the whole method.

What does a course of Gottman Method couples therapy in Vaughan look like?
No one can give you an honest session count over the phone, because nobody has seen you disagree yet. What your therapist will do is give you a range and the reasoning behind it once the assessment is finished, usually by the third or fourth appointment.
The outcome research on the full Gottman Method is thinner than its public profile suggests.
Assessment, roughly the first three appointments
One joint session where you both tell the story of the relationship, one individual session each, and a written questionnaire that covers friendship, conflict, trust, sex, parenting and money. Then a feedback appointment where your therapist names the specific pattern, including the parts that are working. That is also the point where the two of you decide whether to carry on, and where we say if a different approach fits your situation better.
The conflict work
Sessions take one recent argument at a time and slow it down. How did it open. Which of the Four Horsemen appeared. Did either of you attempt a repair, and did the other person accept it. When one of you floods physically, heart pounding and nothing going in, you learn to call a break with an agreed time to return, because a break without a return time reads as abandonment. You leave with one change to practise, not a general instruction to communicate better.
Friendship, meaning, and spacing out
Conflict skills do not hold on their own. This stretch works on knowing the ordinary details of each other's week again, on rituals small enough to survive shift work and a toddler, and on the wishes sitting inside the disagreements you have been having for nine years and will probably always have. Many couples then move to every second or third week before finishing, so the changes get tested at home rather than only in the room.
How do we use the Gottman Method with couples in Vaughan?
Nothing gets prescribed in the first appointment. You come in together, each of you meets your therapist alone once, and you both complete the written questionnaire. What you get back is specific: contempt is absent here, both of you go silent under pressure, the friendship is more intact than you think. You decide together whether to continue on the strength of that read.
Most of the work happens on one real argument at a time. Your therapist looks at the opening thirty seconds, at which of the Four Horsemen turns up, at whether a repair attempt gets made and whether the other person can hear it. Then one move changes. A critical opening becomes a complaint plus a request, and you try it at home before the next appointment.
Sessions also rebuild the ordinary knowledge partners lose track of, who is stressing your partner this month, what they are quietly dreading. We work on rituals that survive real schedules, and on the perpetual disagreements about in laws, money or tidiness that will not be solved. The goal with those is talking about them without anyone getting damaged, not resolution.
It is structured, it carries homework, and it points at conflict. If the real work is the attachment fear underneath the argument, Emotionally Focused Therapy suits you better and we will tell you. If one partner is afraid of the other, or there is coercive control or ongoing violence, couples sessions are not appropriate and individual support comes first. Untreated trauma, addiction or depression in one partner usually needs its own therapy alongside this.

Your questions, answered
What is the Gottman Method and how does it actually work in a session?
The Gottman Method is a structured couples therapy built on decades of laboratory observation of how partners behave while they disagree. A session has a predictable shape. Early on, your therapist assesses the relationship through a joint meeting, one individual meeting with each of you, and a written questionnaire. After that, most appointments take one recent argument, slow down what each of you did in the first few minutes of it, and replace one specific move, such as a critical opening, with a different one you then practise at home.
What is the difference between the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples?
Emotionally Focused Therapy works on the attachment fear sitting underneath the argument. It slows a couple right down until one partner can say the frightened thing out loud, and much of the change happens inside a small number of charged emotional moments. The Gottman Method stays with what is observable and repeatable: how the conversation opens, what each of you does when your heart rate climbs, what happens afterwards to repair it. Progress here does not depend on reaching that raw moment, which is why it often fits couples for whom that level of exposure feels premature. We offer both, and our EFT page covers the other side.
Is the Gottman Method marriage counselling or is it couples therapy?
Both terms describe the same work at InnerSight, and the method itself draws no line between married and unmarried partners. The assessment, the conflict work and the homework are identical whether you signed a marriage certificate, have lived together for nine years, or are engaged and already arguing about the wedding. If you want a page written about married and long-term partnership specifically rather than about the method, our marriage and relationship therapy page speaks to that. This page stays on what the Gottman approach does inside the room.
How many sessions of Gottman couples therapy do most couples need?
Your therapist gives you an estimate after the assessment, once there is something real to base it on, rather than guessing on the first phone call. As a rough anchor, the published study of 106 gay and lesbian couples measured improvement after eleven sessions, and most couples we see are working in that general territory rather than in one or two appointments. Some finish sooner. Couples carrying an affair, a long history of contempt, or an unmade decision about whether to stay usually need longer, and we say so early rather than late.
What are the Four Horsemen in the Gottman Method?
They are four communication habits the Gottman research flagged as corrosive. Criticism attacks the person instead of raising the complaint. Contempt adds superiority, eye rolling or mockery. Defensiveness answers a complaint with a counter complaint. Stonewalling is shutting down and going quiet, often because the body is flooded and nothing is going in. Each one has a named antidote you practise. A complaint plus a clear request replaces criticism, taking responsibility for one small part replaces defensiveness, and a break with an agreed return time replaces stonewalling.
Does Gottman couples therapy work after an affair?
One randomized trial speaks to this directly. In 2024, forty-nine couples in therapy after an affair were assigned either to Gottman Method Couples Therapy or to usual care, and the Gottman group did better on trust, conflict management, relationship satisfaction and quality of sex. Only nineteen couples completed every assessment, so the result is encouraging rather than conclusive. In practice, affair recovery moves slower than other couples work, and the first stretch is usually taken up with honesty, contact with the third person, and whether both of you actually want to rebuild.
How much does couples therapy cost in Vaughan and will my insurance cover it?
Couples and family appointments are $280 for 85 minutes, and the first appointment runs 90 minutes at that same fee. The 20 minute consultation is free and is a real conversation with a therapist. Psychotherapy is not covered by OHIP. Most extended health plans cover a portion when the session is provided by a Registered Psychotherapist, so look on your plan for a psychotherapy line and an annual maximum. We bill Sun Life, SSQ and Green Shield directly, and everyone else receives a receipt to submit.
Can we start couples therapy if only one of us wants to come?
Yes, and it happens often. One partner books, the other agrees reluctantly, and the reluctant one is frequently the more engaged of the two by the third appointment. Coming on your own is also a legitimate option. Individual sessions are $180 for 55 minutes and can be used to work out what you want, how you are feeding the pattern, and what you will say at home. What we will not do is pressure someone into the room, or treat one person's account as the whole picture once couples work begins.
