Our Principles
At InnerSight Psychotherapy, we offer counselling and therapy services in-person at our Vaughan & Barrie locations. Over the phone and online via virtual telehealth. Our psychotherapy services are suitable for children, adolescents, adults, couples and families. Although our therapists use a variety of modalities, all of our treatments adhere to four basic principles.
1
Goal-driven approach
Our therapists use a wide range of therapeutic techniques, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Gestalt, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Focusing, Internal Family System therapy, inner child work and much more. However, it is not the technique that drives our approach, it is the therapeutic design that arises from the client’s needs. The technique is simply the tool we use to help the client, and the tools selected are based on the client’s unique needs and circumstances.
2
Non-pathology approach
We do not follow a pathological approach to treatment. In other words, we do not regard our clients’ challenges as disorders. We organize our approach around the understanding that the unconscious realities that we have created can be changed and developed.
3
Experiential rather than analytical paths to healing
The experiential approach to change facilitates an opportunity to engage the felt sense of the problem, thus accessing a deeper layer of the unconscious, wherein the root of the perceived problem resides.
4
Constructivism
This is based on the notion that we all assemble, or construct, the experiential world that we inhabit, and that we perceive to be the reality. We do this unconsciously, both in a neurobiological sense and a psychosocial sense. Because everyone constructs their own reality and assigns their own meanings to their perceptions, there is no objectively “correct” version of reality. What this means is that there is no set path that the therapists should guide their clients toward; instead, the therapist accepts the validity of whatever existential reality the client lives in. The goal is not to destroy someone’s reality, but to use a creative and progressive process to help them evolve it.
