Trauma and relationships

When trauma lives in a relationship

Trauma and PTSD symptoms make life challenging for the person living with them, and they have a profound impact on the people who love them. If this is your situation, you may find yourself puzzling over emotions you can name the cause of but not the intensity, or trying to help in ways that sometimes land wrong.

None of that means your relationship is broken, and none of it is anyone’s fault. Trauma changes how the brain and nervous system respond to closeness and stress. Healing Connections offers a warm, understanding space where both partners can learn skills to navigate the emotional highs and lows that trauma brings into a relationship or marriage.

Your connection matters, and our trauma-informed therapists are here to guide you on the path to healing together.

What the group offers

Practical ways to strengthen yourselves and your relationship

Healing Connections gives couples real tools and understanding to work with, drawn from research on attachment, the brain and the nervous system.

Evidence-based psychoeducationLearn how attachment theory shapes the way you bond, react and reach for one another, especially under stress.
A blueprint for healingUnderstand what recent research on the brain and nervous system tells us about healing, both individually and as partners.
Conversations that work through conflictPractise exercises and interventions designed to create the kind of conversations that move through conflict rather than around it.
Reflective tasks for deeper understandingUse guided reflection to see how trauma wounds both partners, and how the two of you can tend to those wounds together.

Take the first step toward deeper understanding and heightened empathy in your relationship. If you would prefer private one-on-one work, our couples therapy is here too, and many couples explore PTSD therapy or EMDR therapy alongside the group.

Getting started

How to join Healing Connections

The hardest step is the first one. Here is how reaching out actually works, so nothing about it is a mystery.

1
The free consult

A 20-minute conversation, no commitment

Tell us a little about what is going on for the two of you and what you are hoping for. There is no pressure to share more than you want, and we will explain how the group works.

2
Find the right fit

See if the group suits where you are

Together we look at whether Healing Connections is the right starting point, or whether couples therapy or individual support might fit better first. There is no wrong answer.

3
Begin together

Start the work of healing as a team

When the timing is right for you both, you join a trauma-informed group led by a Registered Psychotherapist and begin building understanding, empathy and steadier ground.

Group timing, format and fees can vary. The easiest way to get current details is a quick, free conversation. Contact us or book your free consult.

How we work

Trauma-informed, and without the lecture

Our facilitators are Registered Psychotherapists regulated by the CRPO, and the group is built around safety, respect and your pace.

Safety comes firstTrauma work only helps when it feels safe. We move at a pace you control, and you are never pushed to share more than you are ready to.
Both partners, one spaceTrauma affects both of you, so the group makes room for both of you. You learn to understand each other’s experience, not just your own.
Connection that protectsSharing the road with other couples who understand can ease the isolation that trauma so often brings into a relationship.
Skills you keepThe understanding and tools you build in the group are yours to carry forward, long after the work itself is done.

InnerSight was founded by Svetlana Antonyshyn, RP, on the belief that healing should centre the person, not a label. More about our approach.

Common questions

Your questions, answered

Who is Healing Connections for?

It is for couples where one or both partners are living with symptoms of PTSD or the effects of trauma. If trauma has changed how you connect, communicate or feel close, this group offers a supportive space to understand it and heal together.

Do both partners need a PTSD diagnosis to join?

No formal diagnosis is required. Registered Psychotherapists do not diagnose. The group is for couples affected by trauma or PTSD symptoms in either partner. A free 20-minute consultation helps us understand your situation and whether the group is a good fit.

What happens in the group?

Healing Connections offers evidence-based psychoeducation on attachment, an understanding of how the brain and nervous system respond to trauma, conversation exercises that help resolve conflict, and reflective tasks that deepen understanding of how trauma affects both partners and how to heal together.

How do I find out the schedule and cost?

Group timing, format and fees can vary. The simplest way to get current details is to book a free 20-minute consultation online at psychotherapyclinic.janeapp.com or call (905) 553-9507, and we will walk you through what is available and what fits.

Is what we share confidential?

Yes. Our facilitators are Registered Psychotherapists regulated by the CRPO. Confidentiality is held within the standard legal limits, which are explained clearly, and the group is built as a respectful, private space where every couple is treated with care.

Would couples therapy or the group suit us better?

Both can help, and some couples do both. Couples therapy gives you private, focused one-on-one work; the group adds shared understanding and connection with others who relate to what you are going through. We can help you choose in a free consultation, and you can change course anytime.

Your connection matters

Rebuilding understanding and empathy starts small. One free, confidential conversation is all it takes to begin healing together.
