Feeling lost isn’t a failure

A bigger question isn’t a breakdown.

Questions about meaning rarely arrive when everything is falling apart. More often they surface at a turning point, or right after you reach a goal you were sure would feel different. The milestone passes, the life you built is in place, and a quiet voice asks, is this it?

That question isn’t a sign that something is wrong with you. It usually means you’ve outgrown an old story about what matters and haven’t yet written the next one. Therapy gives you room to explore it with support, instead of pushing it down or waiting for it to pass.

In plain words

Purpose and meaning therapy is supportive, evidence-based talk therapy for the feeling that something is missing, helping you understand the questions underneath and move toward what genuinely matters to you.

  • Explore the bigger questions with support
  • Reconnect with your own values, not a script
  • Judgment-free, in person or online

A closer look

When life looks full but still feels empty.

The thoughts that feel like a dead end are often the start of something. Step through a few of them, and what therapy does with them.

  1. 1On the surface

    “Is this all there is?”

  2. 2Underneath
A bigger question usually means you’ve outgrown an old story.Questions about meaning often surface at a turning point, or right after a goal you were sure would feel different. The discomfort is part of outgrowing the old story, not a flaw in you.
  3. 3The shift

“Asking the question is the start of a more meaningful chapter, not a crisis.”

No fixed agenda, no pressure

What your first session looks like

Bringing the big questions to a stranger can feel strange. It doesn’t have to. Your first appointment is a 70-minute initial assessment, and here’s how it tends to go.

  1. 1
    Minutes 0 to 15

    Settling in

No script and no pressure to have it figured out. Your therapist welcomes you, explains confidentiality, and makes clear this is simply a space to think out loud.

  2. 2
    Minutes 15 to 60

    Exploring what’s stirring

Together you follow the questions that brought you here, the sense of something missing, and the moments when life feels most, or least, like yours. You start to surface your own values.

  3. 3
    Throughout

    Your worldview leads

There’s no agenda about what you should believe or what a good life should look like. Your therapist follows your values, whatever they are.

  4. 4
    The last 10 minutes

    Leaving with a direction

You agree on what you’d like to explore next and one small thing to notice or reflect on before your next session.

Is a big change behind the question?

Questions of meaning often surface during a move, a loss or a new chapter. If the change itself is at the centre, life transitions counselling may be the closer fit.

How we work

Approaches that help you build meaning.

There’s no single formula for a meaningful life. Sessions stay grounded and unhurried: you explore the questions that matter to you at your own pace, without being steered toward anyone else’s definition of a good life.

Why we trust this work

What the research says

We’ll always be honest about evidence. Research on meaning-focused therapy is promising but small, and the studies vary in quality, so here are three honest findings rather than big promises.

When Statistics Canada asked how worthwhile the things people do in life feel, just over half of Canadians (55.7%) gave a high score of 8 to 10 out of 10 in mid-2025.

Statistics Canada, 2025, Canadian Social Survey

In a review of 15 existential therapy trials, the six testing meaning-centred therapy found a large rise in people’s sense of meaning and moderate relief from anxiety and depression. Studies were few and low in quality, with the clearest support among physically ill people.

Vos et al., 2015, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology

A review of 33 randomized trials found several kinds of programs increased people’s sense of meaning in life, with narrative approaches doing best against active comparison groups. Results varied considerably between studies.

Manco & Hamby, 2021, American Journal of Health Promotion

Our Registered Psychotherapists do not diagnose or prescribe, and this isn’t religious or spiritual guidance, though your beliefs are welcome here. If low mood seems to be part of the picture, we’ll say so and point you to the right next step.

How far could your benefits go?

Pick your plan’s yearly maximum for a Registered Psychotherapist.

5sessions within your maximum
If your plan reimburses the full fee, your 70-minute assessment at $245 plus 4 sessions at $180 uses about $965 of your $1,000 maximum. Plans that pay a percentage, or cap each visit, leave you the rest of every fee.

An estimate, not a quote or a promise of coverage. Plans differ on the percentage reimbursed, per-visit limits, deductibles and which providers they recognize, so check your benefits booklet or ask your insurer about “Registered Psychotherapist” and “Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying).”

Common questions

Purpose and meaning therapy: your questions, answered

Still wondering about something? Ask us in a free consult, or call (905) 553-9507. Phones are answered weekdays 9 am to 5 pm, Saturdays 9 am to 2 pm.

Is feeling empty even a reason to see a therapist?

Yes. A quiet sense that something is missing, even when life looks fine on paper, is a valid and very common reason to reach out. You do not need to be in crisis to deserve support and a space to reflect.

Do I need a referral for purpose and meaning therapy in Vaughan?

No referral is needed. You can book a free 20-minute consultation online at psychotherapyclinic.janeapp.com or call (905) 553-9507. Most people have their first full session within a week.

Is this religious or spiritual?

It can include spirituality if that matters to you, but it does not have to. We follow your values and your worldview, whatever they are, and there is no agenda about what you should believe.

How is this different from depression therapy?

There is overlap, and questions of meaning often go alongside low mood. If low mood is the main issue we will say so, and we can support both the feeling and the deeper questions at the same time, including with depression therapy when that is the better fit.

Will you tell me what my purpose is?

No. We do not hand you an answer. We help you discover and build a sense of purpose from what genuinely matters to you, one small, workable step at a time.

Is it available online across Ontario?

Yes. We offer secure video sessions anywhere in Ontario, plus in-person sessions in Vaughan, Woodbridge and Barrie. Evenings and weekends are available.

How much does it cost and is it covered?

The first 20-minute consultation is free. Individual sessions are $180 for 55 minutes. There is no OHIP coverage, but most private insurance plans cover a portion of services from a Registered Psychotherapist. We bill Sun Life, Beneva (formerly SSQ) and Green Shield directly. Reduced-fee sessions are $125 for individual therapy and $175 for couples and family therapy, with select supervised therapists in training.

What happens in the first session?

An open, unhurried conversation about what feels missing and what you would like more of. There is no fixed agenda and no pressure, just space to explore what is stirring with someone alongside you.

How is this different from talking to a friend, mentor, or spiritual advisor?

Those relationships matter and can sit alongside therapy. A Registered Psychotherapist brings training in how people process meaning, loss, and change, and offers a confidential space with no other role in your life, so you can explore openly without worrying how it affects the relationship.

Is this existential searching, or depression?

They can look similar from the outside: low motivation, questioning everything, feeling flat. A Registered Psychotherapist cannot formally diagnose, but we can help you understand what you are experiencing, and if depression appears to be part of it, we will point you toward the right next step.
