Therapy for men in Vaughan

A place to set it down.

A lot of men are taught to handle it on their own, and the pressure builds over time. Therapy is a practical, no-judgment place to deal with what’s weighing on you, and to leave with real tools. In Vaughan and online across Ontario.

Takes 2 minutes. No credit card. No referral needed.

No judgment, just a plan

Strength isn’t the same as silence.

Plenty of men were raised on a simple rule: handle it, don’t complain, don’t let it show. That works for a while. Then the stress that has nowhere to go starts showing up somewhere else, as a short fuse, a numb stretch, an extra drink, or a slow burnout that takes the colour out of everything.

None of that means something is wrong with you. It often means you’ve been carrying a lot, quietly, for a long time. Therapy gives you a straightforward space to put it down for an hour, sort out what’s actually going on, and get practical tools to handle it better.

In plain words

Therapy for men is practical, evidence-based talk therapy for whatever is weighing on you: stress, anger, anxiety, mood or burnout. It’s goal-focused and judgment-free, and you leave with real tools, not just a vent session.

  • Practical tools, not endless talking
  • Male therapists available if you prefer
  • Judgment-free, in person or online across Ontario

A closer look

The lines a lot of men are taught to repeat.

A few lines most men have said or thought at some point. Step through what’s often underneath them, and why therapy is a place to set them down.

  1. 1The line

“I’m fine, I’ve got it handled.”

  2. 2Underneath
Often a cover for stress with nowhere to go.Handling everything alone works until it doesn’t. Then the pressure shows up somewhere else: sleep, temper, an extra drink, or a flatness that won’t lift.
  3. 3The shift

“Saying it out loud, once, made it feel like something I could actually deal with.”

An illustration of a common pattern, not a real client’s words. There’s no weakness in any of this, and you set the pace.

No couch, no clipboard

What your first session looks like

Forget what TV showed you. There’s no couch, no clipboard, and nobody analyzing you. Your first appointment is a 70-minute initial assessment, and regular sessions run 55 minutes. Here’s how the first one tends to go.

  1. 1
    Minutes 0 to 15

    Settling in

No analyzing, no judgment. Your therapist welcomes you, explains confidentiality, and makes clear you’re here to sort something out, not to be picked apart.

  2. 2
    Minutes 15 to 60

    What’s actually going on

A real conversation about what brought you in, in plain language. No pressure to dig into your childhood unless you want to.

  3. 3
    Throughout

    You lead

You set the agenda and the pace, and your therapist follows. Using a real example from your week, you work out a practical strategy together.

  4. 4
    The last 10 minutes

    Leaving with a plan

You agree on what you’re working toward and one thing to try before next time. Clear, simple, no homework for the sake of it.

If you want to tell your partner

“I’ve been carrying a lot lately, and I’m going to talk to someone about it.”

You don’t owe anyone the details.

Why we trust this work

What the research says

We’ll always be honest about evidence. Research on men’s mental health says more about what gets in the way of help than about any special method, and in a large pool of depression trials, men did about as well in therapy as women.

In Statistics Canada’s 2022 survey, 40% of men who met the criteria for a mood or anxiety disorder had received counselling or therapy in the past year, compared with half of women. Men who hadn’t were also less likely to feel they needed it.

Stephenson & Fournier, 2026, Health Reports (Statistics Canada)

Across 78 samples and 19,453 people, holding tightly to traditional masculine norms went with somewhat poorer mental health and less openness to seeking help. Self-reliance was among the norms most consistently linked to poorer outcomes. A link, not proof of cause.

Wong et al., 2017, Journal of Counseling Psychology

When a US national survey counted anger attacks, substance use and risk-taking alongside the classic signs of low mood, men and women met the criteria for depression at about the same rate. Distress can look different, and it still counts.

Martin et al., 2013, JAMA Psychiatry

Pooling individual data from 1,766 adults in 14 depression trials, researchers found men and women did about equally well with cognitive behavioural therapy. The average gap was under one point on a standard depression scale.

Cuijpers et al., 2014, Depression and Anxiety

Therapy isn’t advice, and a therapist won’t tell you what to do about your marriage or your job. Our Registered Psychotherapists do not diagnose or prescribe, and if sleep, drinking or something physical is driving more of this than you think, we’ll say so and point you to your doctor.

How far could your benefits go?

Pick your plan’s yearly maximum for a Registered Psychotherapist.

5sessions within your maximum
If your plan reimburses the full fee, your 70-minute assessment at $245 plus 4 sessions at $180 uses about $965 of your $1,000 maximum. Plans that pay a percentage, or cap each visit, leave you the rest of every fee.

An estimate, not a quote or a promise of coverage. Plans differ on the percentage reimbursed, per-visit limits, deductibles and which providers they recognize, so check your benefits booklet or ask your insurer about “Registered Psychotherapist” and “Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying).”

Common questions

Therapy for men: your questions, answered

Still wondering about something? Ask us in a free consult, or call (905) 553-9507. Phones are answered weekdays 9 am to 5 pm, Saturdays 9 am to 2 pm.

Isn’t therapy just talking? Does it actually help men?

Yes. Therapy is practical and goal-focused, not just talking for the sake of it. Many men find real relief once they have a place to deal with what is weighing on them and concrete tools to use. You and your therapist set the direction together and work toward it.

Do I need a referral for therapy for men in Vaughan?

No referral is needed. You can book a free 20-minute consultation online at psychotherapyclinic.janeapp.com or call (905) 553-9507. Most men have their first full session within a week.

Can I see a male therapist?

Yes. We have male therapists on the team, and we will match you with whoever fits best for what you want to work on. If seeing a man matters to you, just say so when you book and we will arrange it.

I’m not the ‘feelings’ type. Will this work for me?

It can. This is not about forcing feelings or being made to talk about your childhood. It is about straight talk and practical strategies for whatever is in front of you, stress, anger, sleep, work or relationships. You set the pace.

Is what I say private?

Yes. Sessions are confidential. It is a place to be honest without it getting back to your partner, your boss or anyone else. Our therapists are Registered Psychotherapists regulated by the CRPO, and your therapist explains the standard legal limits of confidentiality in your first session.

Is it available online across Ontario?

Yes. We offer secure video sessions anywhere in Ontario, plus in-person sessions in Vaughan, Woodbridge and Barrie. Evenings and weekends are available, so it can fit around work.

How much does it cost and is it covered?

The first 20-minute consultation is free. Individual sessions are $180 for 55 minutes. There is no OHIP coverage for psychotherapy, but most private insurance plans cover a portion of services from a Registered Psychotherapist. We bill Sun Life, Beneva (formerly SSQ) and Green Shield directly. Reduced-fee sessions are $125 for individual therapy and $175 for couples and family therapy, with select supervised therapists in training.

What happens in the first session?

No couch and clipboard. It is a straightforward conversation about what is going on, what you want to be different, and what would actually help. You leave with a clear sense of the plan and usually one practical thing to try.

How is this different from talking to a friend or figuring it out on my own?

Friends care, but they are not trained to help you work through patterns, and they are close to your life in ways that can make honesty harder. A Registered Psychotherapist gives you a confidential, structured space with someone trained to help you see what is actually going on and build a practical way through it.

Is this something therapy can help with, or am I just having a bad stretch?

It is often hard to tell from the inside, and that uncertainty is a completely reasonable reason to book a free consultation. If it turns out to be a rough patch, a few sessions can still help you get through it faster. If it is something longer-running, we will help you make sense of that too.
