Understanding burnout

Burnout is depletion, not weakness.

A short burst of stress is useful. It sharpens you for a deadline or a hard conversation. The trouble starts when the pressure never lets up, and a stress response that was meant to be temporary becomes your default setting. Over time that can lead to exhaustion, irritability, trouble sleeping, and the cynical, running-on-fumes feeling we call burnout.

Chronic stress can take a real toll on mental and physical health, and it’s very workable. Therapy isn’t about doing more. It’s about helping your system come down and changing the patterns that keep it cranked up, like the pressure, perfectionism or over-giving that fuel it.

In plain words

Stress and burnout therapy is practical, evidence-based talk therapy that helps you calm an over-revved nervous system, build boundaries and recovery into your life, and change the patterns driving the pressure.

  • Calm your body, not just your calendar
  • Boundaries and tools you keep for good
  • Online sessions that fit a packed schedule
Is this you?

What has stress been like for you lately?

Tap anything that sounds familiar. None of these means you’re failing. They’re common, and very workable.

A closer look

You can’t think your way calm, but you can downshift.

You can’t think your way out of stress mode, but you can signal safety to your body and break the loop. Step through three common moments, and what therapy does with them.

  1. 1The moment

“Everything is due at once and I don’t know where to start.”

  2. 2What’s happening
This is the stress response, not an emergency.Your body floods with stress hormones to help you act, but when everything feels urgent at once it tips into overwhelm and you freeze. Two breaths in, one long breath out, then write everything down and circle the single next thing.
  3. 3The steadier thought

“With my body calmer and the list out of my head, the pile becomes a sequence. I only have to do the next thing.”

An illustration of a common pattern, not a real client’s words. Noticing the pattern is where change starts, and it’s very workable.

What your first session actually looks like

When you’re stretched thin, even booking a session feels like one more task. Your first appointment is a 70-minute initial assessment, and here’s how that time tends to go.

  1. 1
    Minutes 0 to 15

    Settling in

No pressure to have it together. Your therapist welcomes you, explains confidentiality, and lets you exhale. You set the pace.

  2. 2
    Minutes 15 to 60

    Mapping the pressure

Together you look at what’s filling your stress bucket, what drains it, and where the pressure is really coming from.

  3. 3
    Throughout

    Your first downshift tool

You try a calming or boundary-setting skill together, so you leave with something you can use that day.

  4. 4
    The last 10 minutes

    Leaving with a plan

You agree on what you’re working toward and one realistic change to try before next week, nothing that adds to the load.

When stress tips into worry or low mood

Why we trust this work

What the research says

We’ll always be honest about evidence. Work stress is well measured in Canada and stress management has a solid research base, though most studies measure how people feel rather than longer-term outcomes, and no ethical therapist can promise results.

In 2023, 21.2% of employed Canadians, just over 4.1 million people, reported high or very high levels of work-related stress.

Statistics Canada, 2023, The Daily

A heavy workload was the most common cause, affecting 23.7% of employed people, followed by balancing work and personal life.

Statistics Canada, 2023, The Daily

In the year before the survey, 7.5% of employed people took time off work because of stress or for mental health reasons.

Statistics Canada, 2023, The Daily

A meta-analysis of 36 workplace stress management studies found a medium to large benefit overall, and cognitive behavioural programs had the largest effects. Most results measured how people felt.

Richardson & Rothstein, 2008, Journal of Occupational Health Psychology

Our Registered Psychotherapists do not diagnose or prescribe. If stress is showing up in your body, it’s worth checking in with your family doctor too, and we’re glad to work alongside them.

How far could your benefits go?

Pick your plan’s yearly maximum for a Registered Psychotherapist.

5sessions within your maximum
If your plan reimburses the full fee, your 70-minute assessment at $245 plus 4 sessions at $180 uses about $965 of your $1,000 maximum. Plans that pay a percentage, or cap each visit, leave you the rest of every fee.

An estimate, not a quote or a promise of coverage. Plans differ on the percentage reimbursed, per-visit limits, deductibles and which providers they recognize, so check your benefits booklet or ask your insurer about “Registered Psychotherapist” and “Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying).”

Common questions

Stress therapy: your questions, answered

Still wondering about something? Ask us in a free consult, or call (905) 553-9507. Phones are answered weekdays 9 am to 5 pm, Saturdays 9 am to 2 pm.

Do I need a referral for stress therapy in Vaughan?

No referral is needed. You can book a free 20-minute consultation online at psychotherapyclinic.janeapp.com or call (905) 553-9507. Most people have their first full session within a week.

Is burnout the same as stress?

They are related. Stress is the pressure itself, while burnout is what happens when chronic, unrelenting stress drains you to empty, leaving exhaustion, cynicism and a sense of running on fumes. Both are very workable in therapy.

Do I have to be in crisis to come for stress?

Not at all. Many people come well before things reach breaking point, to protect their energy and prevent burnout. Therapy is for prevention and recovery, not only for crisis.

How long does stress therapy take?

It varies. Some people come for focused, practical work over a handful of sessions, while deeper burnout or long-standing patterns benefit from more time. You and your therapist review progress together and adjust as you go.

Do I need medication for stress or burnout?

Not necessarily. Many people recover through therapy alone, building practical tools and changing the patterns that drive the stress. Our therapists are Registered Psychotherapists and do not prescribe medication, but we are glad to work alongside your physician if needed.

Can I do stress therapy online?

Yes. We offer secure video sessions anywhere in Ontario, plus in-person sessions in Woodbridge, Vaughan and Barrie. Online sessions are easy to fit into a packed schedule, which is often part of the problem. Evenings and weekends are available.

What if my stress comes with anxiety or depression?

That is very common, and we work with the whole picture. Chronic stress often tips into anxiety or low mood, and your therapist tailors the approach so these are addressed together rather than in isolation.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes. Our therapists are Registered Psychotherapists regulated by the CRPO, and everything you share stays confidential within the standard legal limits, which your therapist explains clearly in your first session.

How is stress therapy different from taking a vacation or practicing self-care?

A vacation or a self-care routine can bring real relief, and we encourage both. Therapy goes further by helping you understand what is actually driving your stress, whether that is workload, boundaries, perfectionism, or a life that has outgrown its structure, and builds lasting changes to how you respond to pressure. The relief from a break tends to fade once you return to the same patterns; therapy works on the patterns themselves.

Is it stress or is it burnout?

Stress usually comes and goes with specific pressures and tends to ease once things calm down. Burnout is more persistent: a deeper exhaustion, cynicism, or sense of ineffectiveness that builds over time, often from chronic, unaddressed stress. A Registered Psychotherapist cannot formally diagnose burnout, but we can help you figure out where you are on that spectrum and build a plan to recover.
