How do I know if we need couples therapy?

If you and your partner are experiencing recurring arguments, emotional distance, difficulty communicating, or a breakdown in trust, therapy can help. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit. Many couples come to us simply wanting to strengthen their connection and learn better ways to navigate disagreements. A free 20-minute consultation can help you decide if it’s the right step.

In your first session, your therapist will get to know both partners, understand your concerns, and help you set goals for therapy. From there, sessions typically involve guided conversations where you’ll learn new communication tools, explore patterns in your relationship, and practice skills like active listening and conflict resolution. Sessions are 85 minutes and take place in person at our Vaughan, Woodbridge, or Barrie locations, or online.

It’s common for one partner to feel hesitant. You’re welcome to start with individual therapy to work on your own relationship goals, communication skills, and emotional regulation. Often, when one partner begins making positive changes, the other becomes more open to joining. Our therapists can also help you find ways to approach the conversation with your partner.

Every relationship is different. Some couples find meaningful progress in 8 to 12 sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support. Your therapist will work with you to create a plan based on your specific goals and revisit progress regularly. The pace is always guided by what feels right for you and your partner.

Our therapists draw from several evidence-based approaches depending on your needs, including Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), IMAGO Relational Therapy (IRT), Attachment Theory, and the Gottman Method. We also use Polyvagal Theory-informed techniques to help partners rebuild a sense of safety and emotional connection. Your therapist will tailor the approach to your unique situation.

Couples therapy sessions are $280 for 85 minutes. We also offer a free 20-minute consultation to help match you with the right therapist before you commit. Sessions are not covered by OHIP, but most private insurance plans cover a portion of psychotherapy fees. We recommend checking with your provider for details on your coverage.
